From Banker to Guru

Giving up the title of Bank of Boston’s youngest VP ever to become an “intuitive” healer may seem like an unlikely career trajectory. But that’s the path Avis Baum of New Canaan’s Ananda Healing Center followed--and it only took a near-death experience to get her there.

"I always had these gifts," says Avis of the healing skills that attract area patients afflicted with everything from cancer to depression. Still, her calling was "clarified," she says, after a surgical error led to her "crossing over and coming back." After that, "I chose, in this lifetime, to help people figure out who they are."

Whether you believe in "crossing over" or not, you might be wondering, what exactly does Avis do? Let's say you went to visit her. First, you wouldn't tell her anything about yourself or ask her any questions, even though you'd probably have plenty of them. You'd just sit down and let her perceive your mental and/or physical issues (she calls this process "reading your field"). "I get messages about the person," says Avis, "then I read their message back to them. By the time I finish, we've hit a chord...I've usually answered all of the questions they came in the door with."

From there, Avis will use anything and everything she thinks will get you back into balance, including crystals, sound, and energy work (think Reiki). Is this for you? You'll never know until you've tried. In addition to private sessions, Avis teaches classes and workshops on meditation and healing, both at Ananda and out of her Norwalk home.
