You have to give OnStar credit for thinking ahead: It was announced Tuesday that the GM telematics unit is teaming with Google to bring mobile navigation to the Chevy Volt via drivers' smartphones. This high-tech system will be a step beyond OnStar's current embedded navigation model. Technology analyst Thilo Koslowski told AutoWeek that this was a crucial move. "OnStar's pioneer status was at risk of becoming stale and the company is doing what is necessary to create the foundation for future success," he said. 

The application will be available in the fall when the Volt is launched. It works on the Motorola Droid, the Blackberry Storm, and the iPhone.
