Do you have plans for the leaves from your trees? Instead of bagging them and shipping them off to the dump, why not make your own leaf mold, known as black gold to gardeners. All you have to do is gather up your leaves, shred them, make a pile and turn it once a week. By next summer you'll have nutritious compost to use on the flowerbeds and vegetable garden.
Here's how:
Pick a spot for the leaf pile. This can be in the woods or in the corner of a small yard.
Attach a bagging system to your lawn mower. Mow the leaves when they're dry. Dump the shredded leaves on the pile. Repeat until you've removed all the leaves from the lawn.
Many hand-held leaf blowers have a vacuum attachment that shreds leaves into a bag. It's easiest to blow them all into a pile before vacuuming them up.
Two more quick tips: Wear a mask, especially if you're allergic to dust and mold. And don't try blowing leaves on a windy day.
