Fairfield U. Trains Interior Designers

Are you one of those people who just loves re-doing houses?  Do your friends ask you to help them design their home because you have such talent?  Are you forever poring over home design magazines and wondering how you could learn more about interior design?  You might be surprised to learn that the only interior design program in the country that caters to adult students is right here in our backyard at Fairfield University.

Rob Hardy is the Curriculum Coordinator of the Interior Design Certificate Program at University College, the continuing education department at Fairfield University.  “The people we teach are for the most part women who want to make a career change.  I’ve taught interior design to bankers, lawyers, nurses, architects and psychotherapists – we even had an exterminator once!”   People interested in the program get extensive counseling from Rob before enrolling.  The program requires a tremendous amount of work and students need to understand what is involved.

Students typically begin with a class on Drawing & Presentation, where they are introduced to drafting by hand, as well as taught how to make effective presentations of their work.  The curriculum includes five different studio classes, lighting, history of furniture and architecture, color design, CAD, perspective and rendering.  Classes are held during the day and a limited selection of classes take place in the evening.

Interior designers are professionals who often work hand-in-hand with architects in both commercial and residential projects.  Designers can draw floor plans and elevations, design cabinetry and kitchens, as well as assist with furniture, window treatments and decoration.

When Rob started teaching 33 years ago, only one class was offered, but over the years he has built the program into a 45 credit Certificate program which is recognized by the National Council for Interior Design Qualification, the body that administers the rigorous examination that Interior Designers must pass in order to be certified.   Once a student has passed the NCIDQ exam, he or she may join the prestigious American Society of Interior Designers.
