Stock up at This Mid-Winter Sale

This "little sister" sale has the goods. The junior sib in question, Pequot Library's Mid-Winter Book Sale Jan. 15-18, is, yes, smaller than the Southport Library's annual summer mega sale. But there is a strong family resemblance. Just like its older sister, it bursts with treasures and bargains.

Front and center at January's Pequot Library sale are all genres of fiction. But non-fiction devotees and those interested in other materials will discover plenty of finds among its hardcovers, paperbacks, children's books, vintage paper backs and videos.

And new this year is the addition of more inventory each sale day. Because the Library's storage larder is full, sale personnel will continually re-stock merchandise tables. This means that bargain hounds will want to show up each day to sniff out the new additions.

The sale isn't all about reading and viewing. Event volunteer Stephanie Weaver has gathered a large number of prints for inclusion in the sale and Paige Gillies, another volunteer, has rounded up a diverse cache of LPs, in jazz, rock, folk, country, Latin and spoken word categories. LPs are now heavily collected and a substantial re-sale market exists. The Record Collectors Guild reports, "According to a recent report from eBay, the online auction giant, they sell more than three million vinyl records each year. It is also reported that eBay users buy and sell six vinyl records every minute (or an average of one every ten seconds)."

And to set a good tempo to help buyers keep pace with all of these temptations at the Library sale, nationally-known pianist Mark Naftalin and Friends perform Saturday and Sunday starting at 1 p.m. WPKN radio will be broadcasting them live as they perform.  Sale hours are: Saturday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m, Sunday, noon to 5 p.m, Monday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Tuesday, 9 a.m. until all the books are gone, with a final sale day price of $5 per bag. All proceeds from the sale support Pequot Library. For more information, visit its website.
