Scout out Who's New at the Zoo

Start the countdown clock!  Summer vacation days are dwindling. So why not stockpile some fun in what's left of August? Connecticut's Beardsley Zoo has some convincing reasons to add it to your last-gasp-of-summer to-do list. First, there's its passel of new residents, eager to introduce themselves. Second, the zoo's "Everyone is a Kid" promotion, through August 31, allows adults to visit at kids' prices.

Three male bald eagles, in their brand new exhibit space, are waiting for your arrival. Two of the eagles, Temp and Kada, were turned over to the zoo by the Alaska Raptor Center. The third made its way via the Florida Audubon Society. All were rescued and as a result of wing injuries, they mostly hop and are nearly flight-less. (They manage only a slight lift-off.) "The Zoo has been working for many years to bring Bald Eagles to Connecticut,” says Gregg Dancho, Zoo Director. Also getting used to their new surroundings, or any surroundings, are two Guinea Hog litters. The 14 piglets, and their beaming parents, hold court in the New England Farmyard exhibit. See them as pint-sized babies -- and compare them to their folks, to see how they'll balloon up to 100 to 300 pounds.

And there are Amur (Siberian) tigers, ocelots, red & maned wolves, Andean (spectacled) bears, and golden lion tamarins to check up on, as well as the zoo's free-flight aviary and its prairie dog exhibit which lets you “pop-up” in special domed viewing areas. With its tempting stable of 300 animals, you might decide this exotic excursion calls for a second day. Admission through August 31 is $9 per person.  For more information, visit the Beardsley Zoo's website.
