Whether on HBO, Saturday Night Live, NPR or performing live stand up, comedian Paula Poundstone's offbeat, spontaneous jokes leave audiences as amazed as amused. Besides her comedy shows, Poundstone also chases laughs as a regular panelist on NPR's live, news quiz program, "Wait, Wait ... Don't Tell Me." Pouncing on current events questions, she's well-informed but the real pleasure is in her quirky unmasking of the absurdist side of the news.
These favored, shoot from the hip, unrehearsed comedy bits of Poundstone's are frequently singled out for praise. The Boston Globe said, Poundstone improvises with a crowd like a Jazz musician swinging in unexpected directions without a plan, without a net. And for Poundstone, it's worth the hit or miss. As she told The Salt Lake City Deseret News, "My act is mostly autobiographical. I do talk about the news and politics. I'm not one of those people who is always right, though. I always go, 'I'm wrong about a hundred times, and guess what? The ceiling doesn't fall in.'"
Poundstone's busy professional life, three children and 18 pets could be the reason her 2006 book, "Theres Nothing In This Book That I Meant To Say, took her eight years to complete.
