Mutts Make Merriment and Mayhem

Johnny Peers & his Muttville Comix have (bow) wowed on David Letterman's show, ABC's"Primetime Live," "Circus of the Stars" -- even at The White House. Now this talented cadre of canines, and their peerless leader, Johnny, take over Ridgefield Playhouse's stage for two performances on May 7. A portion of the proceeds from their shows will be donated to Japan Earthquake Relief.

The Muttville Comix, performing pros, were once mangy mutts whose last known address, before Johnny, was the animal shelter. Now routinely selling out venues, the talented tailwagging members of the 16 dog pack include: Daphne, a skateboarding bassett hound, Fox Terrier, Squeaky who climbs ladders and Sir Winston, a Pointer mix who only answers to “Sir.”

The Salt Lake Tribune singled out this engaging ensemble, saying: "Johnny Peers' Muttville Comix is a menagerie of mongrels. Peers silently plays the fall guy to his mutts. They jump rope together, knock him down, they walk all over him. The flawless comic timing, choreography and uncanny collaboration produce a truly great show."

Johnny's performing partnership with dogs began in 1972, when a beagle mix, Freckles, left the Humane Society to test out an act with Johnny. Now he owns 20 dogs, including a couple of trainees and retirees. Luckily, Ridgefield Playhouse lined up Johnny and his hilarious performing pack for two shows at 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. on May 7. To paraphrase a familiar ad, "Fun quotient? Priceless." From 2-4 p.m. face painting and ice cream are offered in the Playhouse's lobby. Tickets are $15.
