Jon Krakauer's blockbuster book,"Into Thin Air," chronicled the tragic 1996 Mount Everest climb in which eight climbers lost their lives. In Everest, the IMAX documentary, the story is picked up and follows the team who continued on to reach the 29,000-foot summit after rescuing survivors of the deadly storm. The Maritime Aquarium in Norwalk screens this remarkable film, "Everest," in a return engagement. In 1998, when it premiered, it sold out and ultimately became the highest-grossing IMAX documentary ever made. "All IMAX documentaries have the crystal-clear imagery and incredible sound quality that result in the famous immersive IMAX Experience. But Everest adds to that a life-and-death drama that is unlike any other film youll see on our six-story screen," says Maritime's Marketing Director Chris Loynd.
Starring in "Everest" is an international climbing team that includes American Ed Viesturs, who wants to reach the top without using oxygen canisters; Araceli Segarra who aspires to be the first Spanish woman to reach the summit and Jamling Norgay, son of Tenzing Norgay, who in 1953 partnered with Sir Edmund Hillary, to make the first successful climb to Everest's summit. Actor Liam Neeson narrates the film which was directed David Breashears with assistant camerman Robert Schauer, both of whom, of course, also made the climb to Everest's summit.
