At around 10:23 p.m. August 8, Jarred Bennett started texting while driving on Winding Creek Road, according to the Stafford County Sheriff's Office.

Bennett hit a ditch and drove into a tree, due to his lack of focus at the wheel, police reported.

Authorities said that once officers arrived at the scene, they discovered Bennett had been drinking alcohol and was not wearing a seatbelt when he crashed.

He was taken into custody and charged with driving under the influence, using a phone while operating a vehicle, failure to maintain lanes, and other related offenses, law enforcement said.

Police said Bennett was held at Rappahannock Regional Jail on a $3,000 secured bond.
