In late August, the Virginia native was a passenger in a horrific car accident that landed her into the ICU, fighting for her life, a friend wrote on a GoFundMe page.
Sam has had multiple surgeries to repair her liver, which had life-threatening lacerations, as well as treatments for several facial and skull fractures, the GoFundMe page said.
As she began to undergo the plethora of medical procedures, Sam was in excruciating pain, her friend wrote.
On September 7, something terrible paused Sam's progress.
"Sam is only 20, and we want to provide every resource to help her live the life she is destined for and fulfill her dream of becoming a nurse. There are many uncertainties and each day brings small triumphs and a new set of fears."
She is described as vibrant and someone who people love to be around, the GoFundMe page said.
The fundraising page started to assist Sam's family in this difficult journey, had raised over $66,000 of their $70,000 goal as of September 9.
