The Chesterfield program is part of a $1.3 million pilot project to educate young people about drugs, as was first reported by Virginia Mercury.

While other Virginia high schools have implemented drug education curriculum, the Chesterfield program will provide students with specialized counseling, a supportive environment, and the tools to prevent a relapse.

At least 38 children between the ages of 12 and 17 have died from drug overdoses since 2018, Virginia Department of Health data revealed.

The school is set to open on Aug. 22 and could start with about 25 to 40 students.  Students from 11 counties around central and southern Virginia are open to be a part of the Chesterfield program.
