Two Teens Arrested After Shots Fired On Long Island: Police

After receiving an early-morning report of shots fired on a residential Long Island street, police identified and arrested the two suspects, both teenagers.

Matthew Chery and Jahsire May, both aged 19, were arrested on Tuesday, June 20 after police responded to a Shot Spotter alert and recovered a handgun from their car, police reported.

According to Nassau County Police, officers responded to a Shot Spotter activation that detected gunshots on Hudson Avenue in Roosevelt just after 2 a.m. on Tuesday, June 20.

Upon the officer’s arrival, they observed a grey Nissan Armada driving away from the Shot Spotter-alerted area.

Police reported following the Armada for nearly four miles before conducting a traffic stop at Carolina Avenue in Hempstead.

The two suspects, Matthew Chery and Jahsire May, both aged 19, were arrested without incident following an investigation.

A silver handgun was recovered from the vehicle.

Both teens are charged with the following:

  • Criminal possession of a firearm
  • Fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon
  • Second-degree criminal possession of a weapon, two counts
  • Second-degree criminal use of a firearm
  • Reckless endangerment
  • Conspiracy

Both are scheduled to be arraigned at First District Court on Wednesday, June 21.
