Nassau County continues to lead the way in rolling out its COVID-19 vaccination program as it leads the way among the major counties in New York in getting shots in the arms of eligible adults. This week, Nassau County Executive Laura Curran announced that more than 76 percent of adults - including 93 percent of seniors - have received at least one dose of the vaccine, representing the highest rate among counties with populations greater than 200,000. 19: Long Island Infection Rate Remains Among State's Highest; New Breakdown By Community
Long Island saw a slight downtick in its positive COVID-19 infection rate, though it remains among the highest in New York State. According to the state Department of Health, the seven-day rolling positivity average dropped from 4.43 percent on Friday, March 19 to 4.34 percent as of Thursday, March 25, the second-highest in the state behind only the Hudson Valley's 4.82 percent. Relief may be on the way as New York seeks to continue ramping up its COVID-19 vaccination program. New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced on Tuesday, Feb. 9 that the state is expecting a 5 percent increase in its supply of the COVID-19 vaccine for at least the next three weeks as the federal government continues increasing production of the vaccination. CVS and other major pharmacies have launched the company’s COVID-19 vaccination program, which will begin at long-term health care facilities where the population is at the highest risk to contract the virus and potentially die.
