Potential Tropical Systems Brewing In Atlantic Basin: Here's Latest
Forecasters are monitoring two areas for potential tropical development in the Atlantic. The next tropical storms that develop in the Atlantic basin will take the names Emily and Franklin, in that order. In the Central Tropical Atlantic, a tropical wave is producing disorganized showers and thunderstorms a few hundred miles west-southwest of the Cabo Verde Islands. "Development, if any, of this system should be slow to occur while it moves westward to west-northward at about 15 mph across the tropical Atlantic through the end of the week," the National Hurricane Center said.&nb…

19: New Research Reveals Percentage Of Cases That Occur Without Symptoms
Health officials have released a new study confirming that nearly half of all those who contract COVID-19 infections remain asymptomatic, confirming a long-held belief. New research found that more than 40 percent of those who tested positive for the virus have not shown symptoms, according to a new study published this week in JAMA Network Open. In the study, researchers examined nearly 100 studies between January 2020 and February 2021 of nearly 30 million people in Asia, Europe, North America, South America, and Africa. Of those millions, approximately 60 percent of confirmed COVID…

After Ida: Three Possible Tropical Systems Churning In Atlantic Basin
The National Hurricane Center says it's watching three areas of what it calls "potential development" in the Atlantic Basin that could become tropical systems in the coming days. The first is a tropical wave and an upper-level trough producing a large area of disorganized showers and thunderstorms over portions of Central America, southeastern Mexico, and the adjacent waters of the northwestern Caribbean Sea and the southern Gulf of Mexico. A tropical depression is likely to form on Sunday, Sept. 12, or Monday, Sept. 13 while the disturbance moves northwestward and then nort…

July Was Hottest Month Ever Recorded On Earth, NOAA Says
The world broke a dubious record last month as the Earth’s climate continues heating up. July was the hottest month ever recorded, according to new data released by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), causing more concern for those anxious about climate change. The combined land- and ocean-surface temperature around the world was 1.67 degrees Fahrenheit above the average of 60.4 degrees, according to NOAA — making July the hottest month on Earth since record-keeping started 142 years ago. “In this case, first place is the worst place to be,” NOAA Administrator Ri…

Westchester-Based PepsiCo Cuts Jobs After Flat Sales
Westchester-based PepsiCo reported flat sales in the closing months of 2017 and announced on Tuesday that it will cut jobs while offering bonuses of up to $1,000. The layoffs will affect corporate employees, amounting to less than 1 percent of its more than 110,000 employees, the company said. Bonuses go to those who make PepsiCo's snacks and drinks, and those who deliver them. PepsiCo, whose headquarters is in Purchase, cited a major overhaul of the nation's tax code for the bonuses. PepsiCo did not say how many workers would receive them, or what the criteria is for the size of the bonus…
