A woman riding a motorized scooter was killed after being struck by a vehicle at a busy Nesconset intersection, Suffolk County police announced on Tuesday, Feb. 3.
Jie Cao, 78, of Nesconset, was traveling northbound on an electric-powered seated scooter on Lake Avenue South when she entered the intersection of Smithtown Boulevard against a red traffic light and was struck by a minivan at approximately 6:35 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 2, according to police.

Man Killed In Hit-And-Run Crash On Long Island: Police
A man was struck and killed in a hit-and-run crash in Wyandanch, Suffolk County Police announced on Saturday, June 14.
The pedestrian was hit by a vehicle traveling east on Wyandanch Avenue, just west of Mount Avenue, around 7:29 p.m. on Friday, June 13, police said.
The driver fled the scene without stopping and continued eastbound toward Mount Avenue.
The victim, whose identity is being withheld pending notification of next of kin, was transported to Good Samaritan University Hospital in West Islip, where he was pronounced dead, according to the Major Case Unit.
