Joana Carolina Fermin, 39, of Hicksville, and Jonathan Tascon Suarez, 32, of Orange County, were both sentenced to prison time for their roles in the sprawling operation that racked up 319 documented thefts, the Queens District Attorney’s office said Monday, Oct. 5.

Two dogs were killed in a house fire on Long Island on Tuesday, Oct. 6, and two residents were displaced, authorities said.
The Franklin Square and Munson Fire Department responded to a home on fire on Nassau Boulevard in West Hempstead just before 2 p.m. Tuesday, the department said in a Facebook post.

A Long Island man drowned in his backyard pool Tuesday morning, Oct. 6, police said.
David Astarita, 60, of Babylon, was reported unresponsive around 6:40 a.m. Tuesday at his home on Bacon Lane, the Suffolk County Police Department said.
