A late autumn-type chill will be followed by a change in the weather pattern later this week. The drop in temperatures was triggered by the passage of a cold front that swept through the region at the start of the workweek. Fatal House Fire: 62-Year-Old ID'd As Victim In Nesconset
A Long Island resident was killed in a house fire. The blaze broke out around 5:25 p.m. Monday, Oct. 14, in Nesconset. First responders rushed to the scene at Highland Place after a 911 call. Thomas Walz, age 62, a resident of the home, was taken out of the house by responders. Walz was transported via ambulance to Stony Brook University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Convenience store chain 7-Eleven is closing hundreds of stores in North America. Parent company Seven & I Holdings said that the 444 locations were “underperforming.” They make up about 3 percent of 7-Eleven's total of around 13,000 outlets in the US, Canada, and Mexico. Authorities are asking for help in locating a missing teenager from Long Island. Kayla Worilds, age 17, of Bay Shore, was last seen on Sept. 18, according to Suffolk County Police. She was previously reported missing in January. Worilds is 5-foot-6 and 150 pounds, with brown hair and brown eyes. Police said she may be in Brooklyn or Queens. For the second year in a row, Omer Neutra is spending his birthday in terrorist captivity. The New York native, from Long Island’s Plainview, was one of 251 hostages taken during the Hamas-led attacks on Israel on Oct. 7, 2023. Box Cutter-Wielding Man Breaks Into Long Island Home, Threatens Resident, Police Say
A suspect was arrested days after a home break-in on Long Island. The incident happened in Speonk, at around 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 5, according to Southampton Town Police. Investigators said a resident called 911 saying a man known to them had illegally entered their home and threatened them with a box cutter. By the time officers arrived, the suspect had fled. Nobody was injured in the ordeal. On Saturday, Oct. 12, police arrested 42-year-old Bernard Colletti on suspicion of burglary and menacing. Colletti was arraigned the following morning.

The same area that launched two major hurricanes in a two-week span could be the breeding ground for a potential new tropical system.
