Long Island Man Convicted in Fatal 2018 Shooting
A Long Island man has been convicted of murdering a 30-year-old acquaintance in a 2018 daytime shooting, the District Attorney announced.
Following a nearly two-week trial, Jamik Cannon, age 28, of Hempstead, was convicted by a jury for his role in the fatal shooting of Demetrius Winfield in October 2018.
Specifically, Nassau County District Attorney Madeline Singas said that Cannon was found guilty of second-degree murder, first-degree assault, and two counts of criminal possession of a weapon. Cannon’s trial began on Monday, May 3, and the conviction was announced on Friday, May 14.

Johel Castro, age 45, and Nelson Castro-Guerra, age 49, both of Freeport, were arrested around 2:16 a.m., Sunday, May 9 by Nassau County Police for an attempted robbery in Freeport, police said.
According to detectives, the 38-year-old victim was walking in the vicinity of North Main Street and Leonard Avenue when he was approached from behind by the two men.

A Long Island teenager has been arrested for an alleged murder that took place in 2020 in Hempstead.
Denis Gutierrez-Marcos, age 18, of Hempstead was arrested on Friday, April 30, for the Sunday, Sept. 6, 2020 homicide that left Edwin Guerrero, age 22, of Hempstead dead, said the Nassau County Police.
According to detectives, Village of Hempstead Police Officers responded to 43 High Street for a call of persons shot by an unknown subject from a vehicle.

Jamal Cole, age 19, of Uniondale, was arrested around 6:50 p.m., Wednesday, April 14, in Uniondale after police responded to a report of shots fired, said the Nassau County Police.
According to detectives, officers responded to Ash Court for a call of multiple shots being fired. Upon arrival, officers began an investigation and safely recovered a Ruger handgun and a shell casing.
The investigation led to the arrests of Cole, and a 17-year-old from Roosevelt, police said.

Manuel Andrade, age 36, and Refugio Miguel Ponce Nunez, age 51, both of East Meadow, were arrested on Friday, April 2, at the Coliseum Inn, located at 1650 Hempstead Turnpike, in East Meadow, said the Nassau County Police.

Police are investigating a spate of recent shootings on Long Island in recent weeks which could be related to a gang dispute, police say.
The most recent drive-by shooting took place around 1:45 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 23, with 40 shots fired by three different guns into a home on Teed St., in Huntington Station, said the Suffolk County Police.
Police confirm there have been seven shootings in Huntington Station over the last few weeks, including five this month.
