Initial jobless claims jumped by 22,000 to 242,000 for the week ending on Saturday, Feb. 22, the Bureau of Labor Statistics said in data released on Thursday, Feb. 27. The previous week's total was revised up slightly to 220,000.

Party City is “winding down” operations immediately at its approximately 800 locations, CEO Barry Litwin told corporate employees in a video call on Friday, Dec. 20, CNN reports.
Workers were told they will not receive severance pay, and that their benefits would end as the company goes out of business, CNN says.

With pandemic unemployment benefits drying up this month, a newly constructed Walmart Supercenter is offering hundreds of jobs to prospective employees on Long Island.
Walmart announced that it has established a hiring center for its new Supercenter location at 1490 William Floyd Parkway in Shirley, which is in need of filling more than 400 hourly and management positions.
The store, set to open in November, will include a full-service grocery section, a home center, auto care center, pharmacy window, garden area, and a grocery pickup area.

A grieving Long Island mother who just lost her son during a tragic shooting has started a GoFundMe to help pay for his funeral expenses.
David Bliss, age 25, of Shirley, was found on the ground with a gunshot wound on Wednesday, March 24.
The investigation into the shooting continues and the suspect has not been captured.
The family turned to GoFundMe after her husband lost his job due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and Bliss says the family does not have the money for a proper funeral.

Half the country has taken a financial hit due to the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, and most don’t believe they’ll be heading back to work soon, according to a newly released Marist College poll.

One of Long Island’s largest bus companies is closing its doors and laying off nearly 1,000 employees amid the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.
Baumann Bus Company announced this week it will be permanently closing its doors after five decades, costing 900 jobs of previously laid-off drivers who will now not be hired back.
