Man Drowns At Long Island Beach After Being Caught In Rip Tide, Police Say
A Long Island man drowned minutes after entering the water at a popular beach after being caught in rough conditions and a rip current.
Benjamin Kitburi, age 31, died at Ditch Plains Beach in Montauk, around 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, July 19.
When officers arrived on the scene for a 911 call of a swimmer in distress, they found Kitburi, a resident of Montauk, had entered the surf minutes earlier with two others to take a swim, said Capt. Christopher Anderson, of the East Hampton Police.

Long Island Man Charged With DWI After Passenger Injured In Fiery Crash, Police Say
A Long Island man has been arrested for alleged DWI following an early morning crash that caused the vehicle to burst into flames and left a woman seriously injured.
The crash took place around 3 a.m., Monday, July 19, in Montauk on Route 27 (Montauk Highway), said Det. Sgt. Daniel Toia with the Town of East Hampton Police Department.
According to Toia, Wilme Chan-Herrera, age 26, of Mastic, was driving a 2019 GMC Terrain westbound on Montauk Highway when he lost control of the vehicle, striking a guard rail and a tree.

Covid-19: Eighth Death Reported At Long Island Retirement Facility
Peconic Landing, a popular retirement living community on Long Island, said another resident has died in connection to the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, bringing the total number of deaths to eight.
Peconic Landing, in Greenport, reports the eighth death was an 88-year-old man who was a resident of the Shores for Skilled Nursing.
The man tested positive for COVID-19 on Tuesday, March 17, and died on Monday, March 30, at Stony Brook Southampton Hospital. He had known pre-existing conditions., officials said.

Long Island Woman Accused Of Driving Drunk In Crash That Killed Bicyclist
A woman who was allegedly driving drunk hit in a crash that killed a bicyclist on Long Island, police said.
The Suffolk Countycrash took place at 6 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 30, on Flamingo Avenue in Montauk, said the East Hampton Town Police.
According to police, Lisa L. Rooney, 30, was driving a 2019 Chevy Silverado southbound on Flamingo Avenue when she hit, John James Usma-Quintero, 28, of Montauk, who was also traveling southbound.
Usma-Quintero was transported via Montauk Ambulance to Stony Brook Southampton Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Rooney was charged with DWI.

Man Charged In Murder Of 38-Year-Old In Montauk Park
A Montauk man has been arrested and charged with the murder of another local man found dead in a park with numerous head injuries.
Joseph Grippo, 47, was arrested at 3:47 p.m., Thursday, June 20, for killing Robert Casado earlier this month, said the Suffolk County Police.
Casado, 38, was found around 7:30 a.m., Thursday, June 6, by a person who then called police reporting an unconscious man in Kirk Park, police said.
