Disaster was averted when police rescued two Long Islanders from their sinking boat. It happened off the coast of Northport on Thursday, June 27, Suffolk County Police said. Just before 2 p.m. that day, Marine Bureau officers received a report that a boat, sitting about one mile north of Eatons Neck Lighthouse, was in distress. A family of four was rescued from a capsized boat on the Long Island Sound within just minutes of their call for help. The incident took place in Northport around 8:30 p.m., Monday, Aug. 28. Seven people are facing charges after an overnight sobriety checkpoint at the start of the Memorial Day weekend on Long Island.
