Late Brookhaven Bicyclist Is Helping 4 Others Live Following Deadly Crash
A late Long Island man is still helping others, even in death. Joseph Vujasin, 57, of Brookhaven, died after being struck by an SUV while bicycling in North Bellport on Tuesday afternoon, Nov. 26. Suffolk County Police said a 44-year-old woman driving the SUV suffered a medical emergency and hit Vujasin as he rode near the intersection of Post and Atlantic avenues. He was taken to Long Island Community Hospital in Patchogue with serious head injuries and was declared brain dead. The owner of a Long Island HVAC company is accused of taking a homeowner’s money and running. Francis Warner, age 41, of Brentwood, was arrested Tuesday, Nov. 21, according to Suffolk County Police. Warner owns Warner Brothers Air Max HVAC, based in Medford. A North Bellport man told police he hired Warner in October 2023 to do HVAC work on his home and had paid Warner $3,850. Following a significant increase in shootings, the Suffolk County Legislature has approved funding to restore the ShotSpotter gunfire detection system. The Legislature approved the funding on Tuesday, Oct. 11, for the technology that was discontinued in 2019, Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond Tierney announced. According to the DA's Office, shooting incidents doubled from 2020 to 2021, after the ShotSpotter program was discontinued. In 2021, shootings increased by another 34 percent, Tierney said.
