Shark Sighting Keeps Swimmers Out Of Water At Several Long Island Beaches
A shark sighting kept swimmers out of the water at three New York beaches. The sighting was reported on Long Island at Nickerson Beach in Nassau County. As a precaution, the town of Hempstead also closed Lido Beach and Malibu Beach for swimmers for a brief period early Saturday afternoon, Aug. 3. Officials said the shark was spotted about 75 feet from the shore. Swimming resumed at the three beaches a short time after the sighting. Jaws Dropping: Shark Sighting Off Long Island Beach Leads To Limited Swimming
Swimmers at some South Shore beaches on Long Island were forced out of the water after lifeguards spotted a shark looming near the shoreline, officials said. A six-foot-long shark was spotted at approximately 10:45 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 12 approximately 25 yards off Lido Beach, according to Hempstead Supervisor Don Clavin. In response, as a precaution, swimmers were pulled out of the water at Point Lookout, Lido Beach, and Nickerson Beach temporarily. Officials on Long Island are on high alert following a recent uptick in shark sightings off the coast of area beaches. Last week, there were multiple shark sightings reported off the coast - mostly in Nassau County - prompting officials to ramp up patrols over the weekend to ensure the safety of beach-goers as the dog days of summer approach. Swimming Restrictions Put In Place After Shark Caught Off Long Island Coast
New swimming restrictions are now in place after a shark was caught by fishermen on Long Island. Lifeguards were forced to put out red flags and clear the water just after noontime Sunday, Aug. 9 in Nassau County at East Atlantic Beach and Atlantic Beach Estates. Nearby, Nickerson Beach is now waist-deep swimming. Lido and Lido West Beach are now closed to new visitors, both cars and walk-ins, after reaching capacity late in the morning on Sunday.

A Long Island fisherman reeled in a massive bull shark off the coast of a Long Island beach. Manhasset resident TJ Minutillo pulled in an eight-foot bull shark on Saturday, July 25 while fishing at Nickerson Beach. The catch-of-the-week is estimated to be between 375 and 400 pounds. Minutillo, who said he has caught hundreds of sharks in the region, said he and friends often frequent area beaches to go fishing for sharks, though this was the biggest and the first bull shark that he’s caught in New York.
