41-Year-Old In Northeast Dies From Serious Mosquito Virus Eastern Equine Encephalitis One person has died and two others in the Northeast have been infected this summer with a rare but serious mosquito-borne disease. Eastern equine encephalitis (EEE) is caused by a virus spread to people through the bite of an infected mosquito, similar to the West Nile virus. On Tuesday, Aug. 27, an adult from the town of Hampstead, in southeastern New Hampshire who tested positive for EEE died, the New Hampshire Department of Public Health announced. He had been hospitalized with the illness. New West Nile Case Reported On Long Island Long Island health officials have reported a new case of West Nile virus.  On Tuesday, Oct. 26, Suffolk County Commissioner of Health Services Dr. Gregson Pigott reported the county's fifth case of West Nile virus this year. Pigott said the individual who got sick was a Brookhaven resident who is over the age of 50 and has underlying health conditions.  The resident became sick in early September, and has since "almost fully recovered," Pigott said. Third Case Of West Nile Virus Reported In Suffolk County The third case of West Nile virus has been reported in Suffolk County, according to Suffolk County Commissioner of Health Services Dr. James Tomarken. A Smithtown resident who is under 60 years old began displaying symptoms consistent with the virus in September and is undergoing recovery in a rehabilitation center, Dr. Tomarken said.
