Hit-Run Crash Seriously Injures Long Island Bicyclist, Police Say
Police on Long Island are investigating a hit-and-run crash that seriously injured a bicyclist. The crash took place in Melville around 2:55 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 28 in Melville on Route 110. According to Suffolk County Police, a 27-year-old Huntington Station man was riding a bicycle southbound in the right lane of Route 110, approaching Hazel Court, when a southbound vehicle struck the rear of the bicycle. Mosquitoes Test Positive For West Nile Virus In 10 Suffolk County Communities
Mosquito samples collected from 10 Long Island communities tested positive for West Nile virus, health officials announced. Eight of the 47 mosquito samples collected on Thursday, Sept. 8, and Friday, Sept. 9, tested positive for the virus, which brings the total for the season to 85, the Suffolk County Department of Health announced on Tuesday, Sept. 20. SPCA Investigates Animal Sacrifice After Decapitated Goats, Chickens Found In Melville
An animal sacrifice investigation is underway after the remains of five decapitated chickens and two decapitated goats were found on the side of a Long Island road. The Suffolk County SPCA received an alert from the Suffolk County Police Department on Sunday, Sept. 11, that dead animals were found in black plastic garbage bags in Melville, the SPCA reported. The remains were found on the side of Round Swamp Road about 100 feet south of Exit 39 of the Northern State Parkway, according to the report. 52-Year-Old Killed In Crash That Caused Long Island Expressway Closure In Melville
Police are investigating a fatal single-vehicle crash that caused the closure of a stretch of the Long Island Expressway. It happened around 4:40 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 7 in Melville. James Dawson, age 52, of the Bronx, was driving a Ford E350 van westbound, just west of Exit 49, when his vehicle struck the center median, Suffolk County Police said. A New York man was sentenced for his role in a $12 million Ponzi scheme that targeted nearly 50 victims from throughout the region and the nation between 2015 and 2017. Long Island resident Matthew Eckstein, age 52, of Syosset, was sentenced on Monday, July 11 to three-and-a-half to 10-and-a-half years in prison. Eckstein originally pleaded guilty to the charges on September 26, 2019, but later withdrew his plea. Police have asked the public for help locating two men who are accused of stealing thousands of dollars worth of clothing from a Long Island store. The men stole about $2,820 worth of men’s clothing from Dick's Sporting Goods, located at 870 Walt Whitman Road in Melville, at about 7 p.m. on Thursday, June 16, according to the Suffolk County Police Department. Police have released the identity of a 73-year-old man who was hospitalized with serious injuries after he was struck by a vehicle while walking on a Long Island road. Man With Gunshot Wound Faces Drug Charges After Melville Crash
A Long Island man who was found shot in the arm after fleeing police has been charged with alleged possession of drugs, police said. Daquan Cannon, age 31, of Wyandanch, was arrested on Sunday, March 27 after crashing his car in Melville. Cannon was driving a 2011 BMW sedan eastbound on the South Service Road, east of Broadhollow Road when the vehicle veered off the roadway and struck a tree around 8 p.m., police said.
