Long Island Expressway Crash: 38-Year-Old Killed In Collision With Tractor-Trailer
A 38-year-old man was killed in a crash involving a tractor-trailer on the Long Island Expressway that snarled traffic for hours during the morning commute.
The crash happened at around 3:15 a.m. Monday, June 12, in the westbound lanes of I-495 in Hauppauge.
According to Suffolk County Police, Brian Nieves, of Bay Shore, was driving a Jeep Grand Cherokee in the middle westbound lane when he struck the rear end of a tractor-trailer near Exit 56.
Nieves, who was alone, was ejected from the vehicle and died at the scene, police said.

A Long Island man has been charged with driving while intoxicated and fleeing the scene of a motor vehicle crash that killed a pedestrian overnight.
Darwin Contreras, age 30, was driving a 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee in North Bay Shore northbound on Fifth Avenue when the vehicle struck a pedestrian who was crossing the street, in front of 1724 Fifth Ave., at approximately 12:20 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 16, Suffolk County Police said.

Two police officers from Long Island have been suspended and four others, including a supervisor, have been placed on modified duty after bodycam video shows the two officers pushing and kicking a suspect who took police on a pursuit.
The two Suffolk County officers were suspended for the incident which took place on Tuesday, Feb. 23, in which the suspect, identified as Christopher Cruz, 30, who is undomiciled, fled from officers in a stolen vehicle and hit two police cruisers, said Suffolk County Police Commissioner Geraldine Hart.
