There have been 12 new confirmed cases of coronavirus in Nassau County in the last 24 hours bringing the total number on Long Island to 18, officials said. Over the weekend, Suffolk County confirmed its first positive case of COVID-19, and Nassau County Executive Laura Curran said on Monday, March 9, that there are now 17 positive cases of coronavirus. “We're in close contact with state and federal authorities to assess the coronavirus situation, and will continue to keep the public promptly informed,” Curran said. As the number of novel coronavirus cases has climbed to more than 100 in New York, two universities in the metropolitan area have suspended classes. Hofstra University said it has cancelled in-person classes for the week. Columbia University has suspended in-person classes for Monday, March 9 and Tuesday, March 10 because a member of the Columbia community has been quarantined after COVID-19 exposure. Hofstra President Announces Retirement
Following more than 50 years serving at Hofstra University, President Stuart Rabinowitz announced his intention to retire. Longtime women’s college basketball coach Cathy Inglese, who was hired by Hofstra as associate head coach earlier this summer, died after suffering a traumatic brain injury in a fall. A Hofstra University frat hazed the wrong dog, and has been suspended after a video went viral of members forcing a puppy to drink from a beer keg. The Alpha Epsilon Pi fraternity at Hofstra has been suspended after a member was shown holding a puppy upside down and forcing it to do a keg stand.
