A Long Island school aide has been accused of falsifying payroll records claiming to work with a special needs student. Keenya Lessey, age 48, of Baldwin, allegedly submitted 19 falsified timesheets claiming to have worked with the fourth-grader with special needs in the Hempstead Union Free School District when she was not, and wrongfully collected more than $10,000 in pay, Nassau County District Attorney Anne T. Long Island School Superintendent Ousted Over Possible Misconduct
A Long Island school district formally cut ties with its superintendent over possible misconduct. The Hempstead School Board voted 4-1 to remove Superintendent Regina Armstrong at a special meeting held Thursday evening, Sept. 5. A longtime educator from Long Island has been chosen to take over a Westchester County school district. The Port Chester Board of Education announced that Dr. Aurelia Lucia Henriquez, who has spent nearly three decades in various positions throughout diverse Long Island school districts has been named as the new school superintendent. Multiple Long Island school districts were among 33 statewide to be under “fiscal stress,” according to the New York State Comptroller. According to Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli’s Fiscal Stress Monitoring System, eight districts were facing financial stress, including five in Suffolk County and three in Nassau County. 108-Year-Old Elementary School In Hempstead Set To Be Demolished
A school building on Long Island that has stood for more than 100 years will soon be a memory. The Hempstead Union Free School District has begun efforts to demolish and replace Rhodes Elementary School on Washington Street. The project began on April 29 with the removal of trees, and all preliminary testing has already been completed in the building and on the campus.
