These Long Island Schools Honored For Excellent Scholars, Athletes Just 35 high schools across Long Island were given a special designation for their stellar athletes who double as stellar academics. The New York State Public High School Athletic Association, or NYSPHSAA, announced its 2022-2023 “School of Distinction” list on Thursday, July 27. Out of all 84 schools given the award, 35 were from Long Island. In order to qualify, a high school must have 100 percent of its varsity teams qualify for a “Scholar-Athlete team award,” which designates that the team’s average GPA is greater than or equal to a 90.
