Police Cite Fatal Grucci Fireworks Explosion In Issuing July 4th Warning
Police on Long Island recalled a tragic incident from more than 35 years ago to remind residents to be careful and wary of fireworks as the Fourth of July holiday looms. A series of explosions tore through the Grucci fireworks factory in Bellport, injuring 24 people and killing two on Saturday, Nov. 26, 1983. According to a New York Times report on the day of the incident, the explosions could be heard from miles away and at least 100 nearby homes were damaged during the incident.
