Elected officials have announced the approval of emergency federal action that will allow engineers to assess and repair damaged coastal areas of Long Island's Fire Island. According to an announcement by New York Gov. Kathy Hochul on Friday, Jan. 26, the many extreme storms that have slammed into Suffolk County's Fire Island over the last few years make the island eligible for a process that will assess, fund, and repair damaged coastal areas. Five In Disabled Boat Rescued Off Long Island Coast
Five boaters on Long Island were rescued just in the nick of time by Suffolk County Police after their vessel became disabled with a storm rapidly approaching them. While responding to an unrelated call, Suffolk County Marine Bureau officers spotted an emergency flare go off at approximately 8:20 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 3 in the Great South Bay off Fire Island Pines. Police said that at the time the flare went off, there was a storm squall approaching, bringing lightning and wind gusts of up to 30 mph, putting the boaters in added danger. Here's When, Where Suffolk County Health Department Will Be Spraying For Mosquitoes
Suffolk County officials will begin spraying for mosquitoes following the discovery of the West Nile virus at four different testing sites in the county. The infected insects were collected on July 25 from Cold Spring Harbor, Northport, Brentwood, and Melville. The ground spraying will be an ultra-low volume aerosol pesticide named Anvil. Watercraft Rider Drifts In Great South Bay For Two Hours
A worried wife who called the police when her husband didn't return from a ride on his Yamaha watercraft on Great South Bay set off a wide search for the 52-year-old man. William Sullivan, of Bayport, was reported missing around 7:55 p.m., Tuesday, May 21, after failing to return from a planned hourlong ride, said the Suffolk County Police. Sullivan left Homans Creek aboard the Yamaha watercraft at about 6:30 p.m. and when he didn’t return an hour later as planned, his wife called 911 and reported him missing, police said.
