FEMA Denies Emergency Assistance For Suffolk County Residents After Devastating Flooding

Kayaker Rescued After Suffering Medical Emergency At Long Island Lake
A 59-year-old man is recovering after being rescued from a Long Island lake during a kayaking outing. Emergency crews were called at around 1 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 22, for a kayaker in distress at Lake Ronkonkoma, according to Suffolk County Police. The man suffered a medical emergency and his kayak began taking on water, prompting someone on shore to call 911, police said. Four members of the Suffolk County Police Department swam out to the man and brought him to shore. He was taken to Stony Brook University Hospital where he was in stable condition.

Man Rescued From Collapsed Cesspool On Long Island
Police officers came to the rescue of a man who fell into a collapsed cesspool while doing yard work on Long Island. Ralph Santos, 88, was weed whacking at approximately 5:20 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 3 in his backyard on Bancroft Road in North Bay Shore when a cesspool collapsed in the yard, creating a sinkhole, Suffolk County Police said. According to police, Santos fell into the hole, and was forced to use the electrical cord from the weed whacker to keep his head above the contents of the cesspool.
