New Shark Sighting Leads To Long Island Beach Closures Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water… The latest shark sighting off a Long Island shore forced the closure of several area beaches to swimmers this week. A shark was spotted by lifeguards approximately 40 yards off the shore of Nickerson Beach in Nassau County at approximately 3 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 11, prompting officials to red-flag some beaches as a precaution.
