Schools Superintendent John Dolan said that at approximately 3 p.m. on Monday, April 15, it was reported to administrators that a student may have made the threat. Police were immediately contacted, and by 7 p.m., the remark was threatened, with officers going to the student’s home and determining that the threat was not credible. The situation was resolved that night.
“I would like to remind our students and ask our parents to remind their children that what they may think is a joke we take very seriously especially when it falls under the dome of school security,” Dolan said. “Also, when you see something, please say something so we can assess and address each situation with our partners at the Suffolk County Police Department.”
As a precaution, the police department beefed up security in the high school this week, which Dolan mused had an “ironic benefit, as we have never seen traffic on Spur Drive move as slowly as it did today.”
“I would also like to remind everyone that swipe cards were given to all sector cars in our area,” Dolan noted. “We welcome and encourage regular visits by our police department to all our schools. Suffolk County police want to get to know our children and our schools and are there to protect and serve us.
“Oftentimes when a teenager first meets a police officer it is because they rolled through a stop sign or were driving too fast. The police department are valuable members of our learning community and we should applaud their proactive behavior and their desire to be positive partners in helping our children feel safe and encourage them to make good choices.”
