Two Injured When 86-Year-Old Man Drives Into West Islip Insurance Business

An 86-year-old man and his 82-year-old wife received minor injuries when the man drove his vehicle into the front of an insurance store in West Islip.

The incident took place around 2:40 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 1, when the man, driving a Subaru Forrester, drove into the front of the Hometown Insurance building located at 632 Union Blvd., said the Suffolk County Police.

The couple was rescued by West Islip firefighters under the command of Chief Kevin Parrett. The crews had to use hydraulic tools to remove the storefront from the vehicle to extricate the trapped occupants, the West Islip Fire Department said.

It took firefighters about 10 minutes to get the scene under control and the patients transported by West Islip EMS to Good Samaritan Hospital, the department said.

The Town of Islip Fire Marshal and Town of Islip Building Inspector were requested to the scene to check for structural damage.

No other injuries were reported, police said.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.
