Tractor-Trailer Spills Fuel Onto Hampton Bays Road, Prompting Closure

A Long Island road was temporarily closed after a tractor-trailer struck a manhole cover and ruptured its fuel tank.

The incident happened at about 9:20 a.m. on Thursday, Dec. 22, in Hampton Bays, the Southampton Town Police Department reported.

A tractor-trailer was backing into a private driveway on Canoe Place Road near Montauk Highway when it struck the manhole cover, causing fuel to leak onto the roadway and driveway.

As of a report from police at about 3 p.m. on Thursday, Canoe Place Road remained closed from Montauk Highway to Fanning Avenue while Miller Environmental was cleaning the spill.

Authorities do not suspect any criminality in the incident.
