Third Squad Detectives with the Nassau County Police Department say they arrested Maria Adames, 25, of Copiague on Thursday, Sept. 12.

Police say an 88-year-old female victim was contacted by an unknown male caller who claimed to be her grandson on Wednesday, May 29 around 2:30 p.m. in New Hyde Park.

The male told the victim that he had been involved in an auto accident and injured a pregnant woman, according to police.

After the caller explained that he was arrested, police say he provided a phone number for his lawyer and directed the victim to call.

Police say the victim called and was instructed to make a payment $9,800 for bail money as well as an additional $1,200 payment to keep the arrest off his criminal record.

An unknown female later identified as Adames came to the victim’s residence to complete the transaction, according to police.

Adames was charged with third-degree larceny and is scheduled to be arraigned at First District Court in Hempstead on Friday, Sept. 13.
