Series Of Active Shooter Exercises To Be Conducted In Suffolk

The Suffolk County Police Department is teaming with local school districts, retailers and religious institutions to conduct a series of active shooter drills to prevent a potential mass shooting.

In the wake of mass shootings in El Paso and Dayton, Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone and Suffolk County Police Commissioner Geraldine Hart announced that there will be several upcoming shooter exercises to train for a potential shooter situation.

The first active shooter drill is expected to be held within the West Babylon School District later this month.

According to Bellone, the focus of the exercises is to test their SHARE - Sharing to Help Access Remote Entry - initiative in case of the event of a mass shooting.

Bellone noted that the department will also be “partnering with big-box stores and religious (buildings) to conduct active shooters drills, and will be exploring video sharing capabilities with our small businesses.”

“We need to Washington to pass common-sense guns safety legislation, but we can't afford to wait either,” Bellone said. “Suffolk County will continue to do whatever it takes to keep our residents safe.
