Michael Gaines, 42, was identified by police as a person of interest following the fatal shooting of Mtundo Vanterpool at the Reservation on Friday, Aug. 16.
Police said that on Sunday, Aug. 18, Gaines was taken into custody by officers for breaking and entering a motor vehicle. Further investigation by police in determined that Gaines was a suspect in the Shinnecock Indian Reservation shooting.
Gaines, who has a Goldsboro, North Carolina, address, was charged with felony breaking and entering following the break-in. He is expected to be extradited back to New York, where he also has a warrant out for a parole violation.
