The incident occurred around 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 4, resulting in students were being held for dismissal in the Amityville School District Superintendent. The lockout was lifted around 3:45 p.m. Three schools in Massapequa were also placed on lockout for a time.
A window at CPR Cell Phone Repair, located at 45 Merrick Road in Amityville, was shattered by a bullet at approximately 1:45 p.m., Suffolk County Police said, adding that people heard a gunshot and called 911.
Seconds later, a person witnessed cars racing north of the location and heard additional shots fired. The witness called 911 and a 30-year-old man was found on Homestead Avenue, near Orchard Street, with gunshot wounds to the head, said police. A person running from the scene was briefly detained and released.
The victim was transported by Amityville Rescue to a local hospital where he is in critical condition with life-threatening injuries.
Police are not identifying the victim pending notification of next of kin.
Detectives believe the incident was not random. Detectives are investigating whether the dispute was between gang members or related to a drug deal.
