Man Nabbed For Assault At Long Island Walmart After Attacking Officer, Police Say

A Long Island man has been arrested for allegedly attacking a police officer while being detained for shoplifting.

James Armstrong, age 47, of Roosevelt, was arrested around 4 p.m., Monday, Dec. 13 at the East Meadow Walmart.

According to detectives, officers responded to Walmart located at 2465 Hempstead Turnpike, for a reported larceny. 

When they arrived on the scene, Armstrong resisted arrest and fled. He was apprehended after a short foot pursuit, police said.

One officer received abrasions and swelling to his right hand and was taken to a local area hospital for treatment of his injuries.

Armstrong was charged with:

  • Assault
  • Resisting arrest
  • Two counts of criminal possession of a controlled substance
  • Robbery 
  • Assault/obstructing governmental administration
  • Petit larceny. 

He will be arraigned on Tuesday, Dec. 14.
