Man Charged With DWI After Crash Critically Injures Pedestrian At Long Island Intersection

A man is hospitalized in critical condition after being struck by an allegedly drunk driver while walking along a Long Island street, police said.

Queens resident Jermaine Grant was driving southbound on North Franklin Street in Hempstead shortly before 7:30 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 3 near when he allegedly struck a pedestrian near the intersection of Jackson Avenue.

Police said that Grant was driving a 2016 Mazda at the time of the incident, and he remained at the scene following the collision. 

It is alleged that at the time of the crash, Grant was intoxicated, and he was taken into custody by investigating officers without further incident as a result of the investigation.

The man who was struck - whose name has not been released - was treated at the scene and transported to an area hospital with serious injuries, where he is listed in critical, but stable condition.

Grant, 28, was charged with a misdemeanor count of driving while intoxicated. He was held overnight and scheduled to be arraigned on Monday, Jan. 4 in First District Court in Mineola.
