Long Island Teen Caught With Handguns Loaded With Overcapacity Magazines During Probation Check

A teenager was caught in possession of two handguns with overcapacity magazines during a probation check on Long Island, police say.

The check occurred around 8:20 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 13 in North Massapequa, Nassau County Police said.

According to Detectives, First Precinct Police Officers with the assistance of the Nassau County Probation Department conducted a night watch probation check at a North Massapequa residence located on West Drive. 

While inside conducting a lawful search of the teen, Jerell Deleon, 18, officers observed a handgun loaded with an overcapacity magazine within grabbable reach of Deleon, police said.

Deleon was placed into police custody without incident. 

A further search of the house revealed a second handgun, defaced, with an overcapacity magazine.

Deleon was charged with two counts of criminal possession of a weapon, two counts of criminal possession of a firearm, two counts of criminal possession of a weapon (large-capacity magazine), two counts of criminal possession of a weapon  (previous conviction) and criminal possession of a weapon (defaced firearm). 

He is due to be arraigned on Saturday, Sept. 14 at First District Court in Hempstead.
