The incident took place around 1:30 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 13, near Fishers Island, said Coast Guard spokesman Petty Officer Hunter Medley.

Medley said the group was attempting to drop anchor when the boat capsized. Three were rescued from the waters by a passing Good Samaritan, a third was rescued by Coast Guard officials out of New London, Connecticut.

Officials say the victims were in the water for about 20 minutes and were suffering from mild hypothermia. Most important, Medley said, no one in the group was wearing a life jacket.

"I can not say this enough times," he said. "Always wear life jackets when boating."

He also warned boaters to be vigilant when boating during cold weather due to the chance of hypothermia.

The four were taken to the Coast Guard dock in New London where they were evaluated by EMS officials.
