A 74-year-old man who lives out of state was contacted by two men in Nassau County on Friday, Feb. 7, who stated that his son had been arrested and required bail money for his release, police said.
According to Nassau County Police, the victim was instructed to put $6,500 in cash into a package to be sent to the UPS facility in Uniondale. The victim became suspicious and proceeded to contact police.
An investigation was launched, and detectives coordinated with UPS security to set up a controlled delivery to the facility.
On Tuesday, Feb. 11, Tyshawn Redford, of Roslyn Heights, and Keyshawn Coveal, of Hempstead arrived at the facility at approximately 11 a.m. to retrieve the package.
They were placed under arrest without incident and were found to be in possession of forged documents in the name given to the victim at the time of the initial phone call.
Both Redford, 25, and Coveal, 23, were charged with possession of a forged instrument and attempted grand larceny. They were scheduled to be arraigned in First District Court in Hempstead on Wednesday, Feb. 12.
