The latest shark sighting off a Long Island shore forced the closure of several area beaches to swimmers this week.

A shark was spotted by lifeguards approximately 40 yards off the shore of Nickerson Beach in Nassau County at approximately 3 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 11, prompting officials to red-flag some beaches as a precaution.

Town of Hempstead beaches between Point Lookout Civic Beach and Lido West Town Park were forced to close, officials said, following the latest sighting.

It marks the 17th confirmed shark sighting in Nassau County this summer, according to County Executive Laura Curran.

Officials said it is unclear when swimming will be allowed to resume at beaches in the Town of Hempstead. Updates are expected as the county’s “shark patrol” monitors the waters. Check Daily Voice for updates as they are made available.
