Jose Suarez, 24, of Central Islip, was found guilty of charges that include murder, racketeering, and multiple counts of assault and weapons charges, by a jury in Central Islip federal court this week. His first trial had ended in a mistrial earlier this year.
According to prosecutors, Suarez and other gang members assaulted two men who disrespected their gang and injured a woman who was at the site of the Central Islip deil where Brentwood resident Esteban Alvarado-Bonilla, 29, who was an alleged member of the 18th Street Gang, a rival of MS-13.
Alvarado-Bonilla is believed to be a rival gang member due to the Peyton Manning No. 18 jersey he was wearing when he was killed at the El Campesino deli in January 2017. A female clerk was also wounded in the incident and had to be hospitalized.
Suarez becomes the latest MS-13 gang member to be targeted by prosecutors and local law enforcement. In recent weeks, members have been sentenced for an attack that left a teenager paralyzed, murdering a second pair of teens and others have been indicted for their roles in a murder spree.
