Rescue crews in Huntington Station were called just after 6 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 26, with reports that a woman was trapped in a hole in the ground outside a home on West 10th Street, according to Suffolk County Police.
When officers arrived, they found three people in the hole - two men in their 60s and a woman in her 70s. The hole measured approximately six feet wide by six feet deep, police said.
A bystander helped police pull one person to safety. Crews then brought in a ladder, allowing the remaining two to climb out.
The woman and one of the men were taken to Huntington Hospital for evaluation, police said. The second man was not injured.
It was not immediately clear how long they were trapped there or what caused the hole to form.
A building inspector with the Town of Huntington was called in to evaluate the property and investigate the cause.
