A recent post asking where to find the “best seafood in Suffolk County” garnered over 100 responses on the “Long Island Food & Drink” Facebook group.

Days later, there was one clear winner: Varney’s Restaurant in Brookhaven, located at 2109 Montauk Highway.

“Sooooooooooo delicious,” reads one enthusiastic comment. “Always fresh and delicious.”

Plenty of others seemed to agree, with the restaurant snagging at least 42 recommendations in all.

Varney’s opened in 1981 under the direction of Will Varney, a Long Island native who spent “many years” clamming on the Great South Bay, according to the eatery’s Yelp page.

The restaurant serves up an array of fresh seafood, including clams on the half shell, shrimp parmigiana, and lobster roll, as well as daily fish specials.

Diners can also choose from several burgers, soups, and hot sandwiches.

Among its most popular dishes, according to Yelpers, are the baked clams, cod fish sandwich, and Seafood Fra Diavolo, served with mussels, clams, scallops, shrimp, and crab legs.

“The atmosphere here is fun and friendly. Prices are OK - a little on the higher side, but not crazy,” Steve W., of Islip Terrace, wrote on Yelp.

“Food, Service, ambiance… this is a hidden Jem!” Ken B., of Bellport, added. “Service was impeccable. Food (omg the muscles) is a dinner alone. If ever in the area stop in, you'll see for yourself.”

Varney’s Restaurant is open Sunday through Thursday from 11:30 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Friday and Saturday from 11:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Find out more on its website
